Probably nothing, right? Wrong!
Yesterday, they reminded me that we live in such a small world and passion can be a great unifier.
Let me explain.
I forget how small of a world we live in when I’m engulfed in my own bubble, focusing everyday on building my business and taking care of my family. But you know that my values this year include FAMILY AND COMMUNITY, right? Yesterday, I remembered how big our community really is.
On Global Running Night, a SRRC running friend (who would become one of my athletes a few days later) tells me about an anime themed 5k she’s running because her friend’s husband is organizing it. We laughed about the things that motivate people to run and confirmed that the date didn’t conflict with The Teal Run and started encouraging other people to sign up.
Yesterday, Coach Irina and I attended a PRIDE themed Pop-Up on Post and two gentlemen grabbed one of The Teal Run flyers to share with their friends that are running an anime themed race. They mentioned this as they’re walking away from the table and it didn’t dawn on me that they meant ‘running, running’ as in ‘in charge of’ said event until I’m talking to my friend Alina, of Ca Black Label. Alina and Jose designed my new “Coach” hat and were the friends that invited me to the Pop-Up. While talking about the event, Alina tells me that Ca Black Label also shared the Initialmile reel for the Anime Fan and Fitness Festival 5k Run because they “helped his wife with her beanies for her business, The Baking Connection.” How awesome is that? I went from never hearing of a local 5k, to meeting 4 people connected to the race and local businesses in less than a week?
This reminded me of a few important things:
1. Runners Support Runners. Outside of running, we may find that we have very few interests in common and that’s ok. When we hit the street, we are connected and we will continue to support each other in many different ways.
2. Support Small Businesses. Small business owners know how hard it is to get your name out there, grow your business and thrive in this economy. Those of us who believe in the big picture will continue to show up and show out for each other. We will continue to remind you that a simple like and share can go a really long way. You may not be in need of the goods and services that we are selling at the time, but when you continue to share our stories and spread the word, your small impact will ripple through the community in large ways.
3. Count Your Blessings and Remain Open. I have been blessed to be in the right place at the right time countless times in my life. I also have benefited from friends being in the right place at the right time. I do not take for granted the people who love and support me. I know how rare it is to have people always willing to show up for you. I was a young mother who is now an older mother, who has been reminded often about how isolating motherhood can be when also juggling life, career, relationships and more. Amelia attended the pop-up with us yesterday and I was lucky to have Auntie Irina there to play with her while I helped Alotmoore put clothing on hangers and J & R Scentuals excitedly chasing bubbles with her. Over the years, we’ve had plenty of friends become family. We know that life is not always Rainbows and Sunshine but when we remain flexible and open, each day can be a new adventure.
The running community is growing everyday. If you are looking for motivation to show up, we’re here for you. If you haven’t found your people yet, keep your heart open. Sometimes you have to step outside of your comfort zone to find them. The same goes for business. If you have a goal in your heart that you’re reaching for and don’t feel like you’re getting close fast enough, keep going. The community will show up for you, when they realize you’re there too.
