Pretty sure you’re old enough to make your own decisions by now
So why are you letting other people set your goals?
You want to run X Race distance because someone else told you to.
You want to run X Race under Y time because someone else told you to.
You think you need to be this size, or under this weight.
You think you need to be able to run for this amount of time to join a group or deserve a coach.
It’s all BS.
I know because I was there too!
I let other people make me feel like I needed to run a Marathon to be a real runner and a good enough coach.
I believed I needed to be able to run at a certain speed because others made it seem normal and because it would keep me under the cut off time for certain races.
I ran my first 10k and Half Marathons because I wanted to. I’ve admitted that my training wasn’t exactly ideal. I compiled plans from the internet but the thing I knew then and is fundamental to my coaching now, was that I knew the plan had to fit my life. I was a mother, working full time and commuting to work. I didn’t have unlimited time to train so I had to make the training fit me, not the other way around.
Then we went through a pandemic. My loneliness drew me to join a run club. The internet algorithms took over and I was being fed so many opinions about training, racing and coaching. Suddenly, being happy with my half marathon times wasn’t enough. When I started racing, my biggest fear was being the last runner on the course. Aside from the half I finished while pregnant with Amelia, I don’t think I ever came close to being the last person so I was content.
Fast forward to getting my coaching certification and helping other women learn to be comfortable showing up to races exactly as they were. The peanut gallery was alive and well telling me what my next races should be and how I needed to get to those finish lines. It took me a while to realize other people were setting my goals for me. I never even said I wanted to run that race, so why did I need to run that time?
EWM came on the street and said “every woman deserves the shot at completing a marathon as long as they can WALK at a fast enough speed.”
It took long conversations with athletes about their goals to realize I wasn’t practicing what I preached. I was still letting other people influence my goals instead of listening to my own heart and mind.
So, I invite you to learn from my mistakes. Take a moment to really evaluate your goals. (I’m here for you if you’re ready to talk them though.)
Why this goal? Why this race? Why that jean size? Why that job? Why that camera ;-P
Is this something you’ve truly been dreaming of or is there an external influence guiding you this way? For example, yes, we all have to work and pay our bills. Are you working the career you want or did you take the job that was offered to you that you hoped would be sufficient to provide for your family? Are you living in the city that you feel most alive in, or did you settle for proximity to your family, friends and job?
I coach high-achieving women to find their place in a fitness world that often feels like it was made for everyone else.
Making sure that your goals are your goals is a sure fire way to help the road of true possibility appear.
You Can Do It! I can help!
