When I was at Haas School of Business, in 2007, I have a vivid memory of what success meant to me. We were in the middle of a presentation from a gentleman explaining how he successfully launched a world famous tech company in Silicon Valley. He kept talking about what SUCCESS meant to him, repeating the word over and over. His version included monetary measurements and the growth of a tool, measured by users, etc. At the very same time, I received a text from my brother that read “Success.” I laughed out loud because in our world, that day, success meant getting my very stubborn baby to drink from a bottle. This was something she did VERY rarely and meant more to me than anything.
Fast forward a few years and I still find these amazing examples regularly in my life and those of the people around me.
- When I set out for a workout with Amelia, and she treats me to a nap.
- When I finish a solo workout fully while she naps.
- When I get my workout done for the day and prepare a healthy meal for my family.
- Some days it may mean finishing your workout before the weather changes.
- Getting your laundry done AND taking a shower, in the same day.
- Remembering everything you wanted from the grocery store.
- Trying a new recipe and actually liking it.
- Trying a new restaurant that turns out to be better than expected.
- Receiving the promotion you were seeking at work.
- Getting a new job.
- Buying a new car.
- Paying off all of your debt.
- Doubling your savings.
These are just a few examples that I can think of and they are all great examples. The important thing is to remember that your successes don’t have to look like anyone else’s successes!!
Your life is your own. Your goals do not have to look like the goals of the people around you in order to be important. You MUST look at the world through your own lense. We should each use our own measuring stick. You may be motivated by those around you but please do not let yourself fall into the trap of comparison. Choose every day to seek your goals, reach for your measures of success and hopefully, look back and help the next person reach for theirs when you get there!
