Reflections from the Redwoods

One of the benefits of running slower is having the time to really look around and take it all in. You’re not zooming by the beautiful trees and other runners. Whether you’re taking pictures or committing the beauty to memory, you’re allowing yourself space to absorb the moments just a little more. From my very first half marathon, March of 2020, I’ve loved that the back-of-the-pack runners I’ve been around always take the time to check on each other. We notice when a runner is starting to sway, lose their step or comes to a complete stop.

After the Avenue of The Giants Half Marathon, I decided that Party Pace is also “Caregiving Pace.”

When you’re more worried about making it to the finish line safely, and less worried about the clock, you have the time to stop and ask a runner “Are you okay? Do you need anything?” This time I offered salt and carbs but the runner wanted ibuprofen, which Coach Ingrid was able to take care of. In the past, I’ve given out my candy, wipes, bandaids and kind words. You never know what someone might need and what you may be able to offer. I know so many runners who have met friends on the race course because when things get tough, you look around to see who’s there and that person suffering beside you may become the lifeline that gets you to the finish line.

I type this to remind us to:

1. Keep our eyes open. You don’t know who might need you and who might be close by when you’re in need.

2. Be willing to accept the help when it’s offered to you.

3. Be clear on your goals

4. Remember that you can have different goals.

For me personally, a race time has never been so important that I could forgive myself for ignoring a runner in need. I’m no doctor, but I’ve always asked if they were ok and if I could do anything for them. I’ve waived down the EMT’s or a nearby volunteer and I pray that if I’m ever the one in need, someone will stop to help me get the care I need. Races show us the best of humanity and often the best of who we can be.
